The 21st Surajkund fair showcased crafts from India and countries of the South
Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), complete with a replica of
the grand Chaminar of Hyderabad at its entrance. The fair displays the rich
culture of each state of India, including Pashmina shawls of Jammu and Kashmir,
colourful carpets of Uttar Pradesh, saris of Gujarat, life-sized figurines of
polystone from Chandigarh and handicrafts of Assam.
Andra Pradesh, who hosted the fair this year, showcased exquisite crafts such as
intricate carvings on wooden panels, wall designs, silk saris and traditional
kalamkari paintings. Countries of the SAARC also presented their creations:
Thailand had 9 stalls displaying coloured candles, silver jewellery, craftwork
and herbal cosmetics. Afghanistan exhibited embroidered fabrics, carpets and
their beautiful blue lapas stoned jewellery. Bangladesh exhibited bamboo
handicrafts and handloom products. Nepal offered shawls and decorative pieces.
All was a delight to the eye and the camera and well worth a visit. I haven't
even mentioned the cooking smells and the music and the excited chatter of the
visitors and stall-owners.
